Camp Quest Colorado (2017)

Camp Quest relies on volunteers from across the country to run our camps and programs. Here's what a few of our volunteers have to say about their experiences at camp.

Camp Quest NorthWest has honestly changed my life. I began as a counselor in training and loved it so much that I stayed on as a volunteer! Watching our campers develop their critical thinking, cooperation, and creativity skills during the week is the highlight of my year.
— Kiah, Volunteer and Board Member

From Amanda:

The beauty of Camp Quest is that its importance is boundless and immeasurable; it means something different but equally valuable to every single person who is touched by its magic. My life will forever be shaped by my experiences at Camp Quest as a camper, Peer Leader, and counselor. For one week every year, I have the honor of encouraging children to be themselves, ask questions, and question answers. I notice how each camper changes from year to year as they embark on a journey of self-discovery. I listen as they intelligently discuss topics typically deemed far too advanced for their age. Most importantly, I learn as they teach me about new concepts and perspectives. I was thrilled to continue my own journey at Camp Quest as a counselor two years ago, and I keep returning. I return because I know that I play a small part in something much larger than myself; one week of positive influence can forever change the direction of a camper’s life, especially one that feels insecure in their home community. Camp Quest plays a crucial role in the lives of campers and staff as a supportive, safe place for freethinkers and non-believers. It teaches how to respectfully question beliefs and think critically about the surrounding world. Campers leave with the confidence and tools to have thought-provoking conversations with neighbors, friends, and family who view the world differently. Campers and staff develop meaningful relationships that last far into the future. For so many of us, Camp Quest is a family, a home, and a community that will always live in our hearts.

From Tim:

Taking one of my weeks of vacation to go spend with a bunch of other people's kids with no internet was one of the best decisions I've made in a long time. It was incredible. There were many kids who normally get bullied and teased for being different. They get a week of being loved and accepted exactly as they are. They get pushed to do things they didn't think possible. There were a couple of times I was crying I was so proud of those kids. The future is looking very, very bright.

From Shelby:

I learned so much from young freethinkers and I engaged in so many conversations with adults that changed my way of thinking. Everyone at this camp, no matter the age, was accepting and amazing at critical thinking. I came out with a lot of bruises but gained a lot of experiences. It was incredible to be at a place where being an Atheist wasn't a bad thing.

My fellow counselors made camp the most fun I've had all summer, and I will definitely be back next year!

From Chris:

I'll try not to get too sappy but nothing in my life has been quite as liberating as being surrounded by a whole bunch of science-minded freethinkers like myself. To be able to say, "I'm an atheist" out loud and not immediately worry about what people think is an indescribable feeling.

I met a wonderful group of friends, a hardworking staff, and 60 unbelievably bright and compassionate kids. This week I've been more active, more patient, and more friendly than I've ever been in my life. I had more fun, laughed harder, and grew personally more in this one week than I have all year. This was without a doubt the best week of my summer and I cannot wait to go back.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of this organization and I'm excited to see where it goes and where it takes me personally. Thank you to everyone who made this an awesome experience.
